| A hand up: Fasken Martineau & CABL award first Blackburn Scholarship to McGill law student Posted Date: 12/03/2009
Toronto (Canada) - Fasken Martineau, a leading international business law and litigation firm, announced today the inaugural recipient of the Lucie and Thornton Blackburn Scholarship, awarded in partnership with the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL). The 2009 recipient is Don-Ray Simmonds, a second year law student at McGill University in Montréal.
“We feel privileged to help this student pursue his legal studies. Offering a ‘hand up’ in this way is a terrific way to foster diversity in our profession,” said Douglas New, Co-Chair of Fasken Martineau’s Diversity Committee.
The $5,000 grant, designed as a “needs based” scholarship for students entering their second year of attendance at Canadian law school, is aimed at students from equity-seeking groups. The scholarship is named for Lucie and Thornton Blackburn – two exceptional individuals whose story is intertwined with the American abolitionist movement, the Underground Railroad, Canadian legal history and Fasken Martineau. | | Read More |
